IDENTIFICATION OF VICTIMS

Thousands have been victims at sea, and only a small portion of them have been recovered or identified. The vast majority of those who have died in the Mediterranean remain completely unknown to this day, both in terms of the actual number and the identity of the victims.

From this perspective, particularly following the shipwreck off the coast of Lampedusa on October 3, 2013, there has been increased discussion and debate at various levels about the need not only to recover all the bodies of those who died at sea but also to give each one a name, an identity, and a proper burial. This is not only to preserve the dignity of the victims but also to provide their families with information and allow them to reunite with the remains of their loved ones.

Giving a name to all the victims of the Mediterranean represents a great challenge for Italy and Europe, a challenge that certainly presents practical difficulties, but one that can be overcome through collaboration between institutions, research bodies, scientific institutes, and organizations.

Since April 18, 2015, the October 3 Committee has been regularly engaged in efforts to identify the numerous victims of maritime tragedies. Currently, in Italy, there are thousands of migrants who died at sea and remain without a name.
