"Lampedusa 2023" will attempt to answer simple questions: How is it possible that today shipwrecks still occur with hundreds of deaths, with a passing of blame and unkept promises? How is it possible that the compassion of ten years ago has transformed into indifference, if not hostility towards those fleeing wars and persecutions? How is it possible that Operation Mare Nostrum has been shelved, and Italy and European institutions have only sought to strike deals with "devils," paying warlords and dictators to "keep" the refugees?
The security decrees, the "war" on NGOs that have launched their rescue ships at sea, the improbable trials of alleged smugglers, the "donation" of patrol boats to the Libyan coast guard... Ten years in which everything has happened, and only one thing has not changed: that someone dies in the Mediterranean every day.
During the three days in Lampedusa, survivors of shipwrecks, those involved in sea rescues, relatives of the deceased, and those who have tried to give names to the bodies will have their voices heard, as well as those involved in reception and assistance.
From September 30th to October 3rd, 2023, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the massacre on October 3rd, 2013, and the Day of Memory and Hospitality, the days of the A Europe of Rights project organized by the October 3rd Committee will take place in Lampedusa.
The event will be attended by 36 high schools from 8 European Union countries, 7 non-governmental organizations, and 2 United Nations agencies.
